Solid Tungsten Carbide (STC) Single Flute Upcut Spiral End Mill

The Solid Carbide (STC) single flute upcut spiral end mill is used for grooving and cutting aluminum, plastics, acrylics, foam, ABS, ACP and light metals, sheet material, non-ferrous metal and plexiglass. Also used for CNC machining of thermoplastics and thermosets. The tools show the highest cutting performance even on CNC engraving machines. The single tooth cutters are suitable for HSC milling.

Solid Carbide single flute upcut spiral end mills are generally used for machining "soft" materials. Their very large chip chamber compared to other spiral slot milling cutters ensures ideal chip removal with a high stock removal rate. For very hard plastics and harder short-chipping aluminum grades, spiral slot milling cutters with two cutting edges are better suited. We therefore recommend our Solid Carbide end milling cutters PWWU-Alu for machining aluminum!

Due to the narrow spiral pitch of this Solid Carbide spiral slot milling cutter and the large, finely ground chip space, welding of the aluminum chips onto the base body of this Solid Carbide finishing cutter is largely prevented when milling aluminium and a good chip ejection is achieved. The cutting edge of the Solid Carbide single flute upcut spiral end mill is very fine and sharp. This results in remarkably good results even with materials that are difficult to machine.

The Solid Carbide single flute upcut spiral end mill with a positive spiral grooved cutting edge for optimal milling in clockwise direction shows a better milling pattern on the lower side of the workpiece, as the chips are removed upwards and the lower workpiece edge is less affected than the upper workpiece edge with the chip exit.

Cutting speed when milling with the single tooth cutter:

The cutting speed depends on the material to be machined. It is determined by the speed and diameter of the Solid Carbide spiral slot milling cutter. The cutting speed is given in m/s (meters per second). The selection of the correct cutting speed of the end mill is of decisive importance for achieving a corresponding milling result.

Guide values for cutting speeds for Solid Tungsten Carbide single flute upcut spiral end mill:

  • Softwood: 60 - 90 m/s
  • Hardwood: 50 - 80 m/s
  • Chipboard: 60 - 80 m/s
  • Blockboard: 60 - 80 m/s
  • Hardboard: 40 - 60 m/s
  • Plastic coated board: 40 - 60 m/s

Plastics are milled at a medium cutting speed. Depending on the type of material (hardness and plastic behaviour), alcohol or water is used as cooling lubricant. Depending on the type (brittle or tough), there is a wide range of cutting speeds for metals. In series production or with milling-intensive workpieces, e.g. in aircraft construction, all parameters are optimally matched to each other for better economic efficiency. Then speeds of up to 200 m/s are also possible. In most cases coolants are still used.
